Green Bags Forever Blog Launches on Saint Patrick's Day
It seems appropriate that Green Bags Forever Blog officially launches today, on Saint Patrick's Day. Ireland was the first country to introduce a plastic bag tax resulting in 90% less consumption of this modern day menace.
The Green Bags Forever Blog, will highlight various creative initiatives around the world relating to the downfall of plastic bags. The blog can be found at http://greenbagsforever.blogspot.com/
It is worth remembering on this day that Ireland banned plastic bags in 2002; which has seen a reduction in their plastic bags by 90%. Extraordinary numbers which surprisingly have not influenced the government in the UK to follow suit. Indeed, The Irish Republic – the first nation to tax plastic bags - has generated more than €120m (£109m) in tax. Surely even Gordon Brown can see the value in this?
A recently posted Green Bags Forever Blog item brings attention to artist Bryant Holsenbeck, who is attempting to live plastic free this year. Meanwhile in Dubai - where 1 in 2 camels die eating plastic litter - children are being shown the carcass of a long-dead camel, ribs covering a tangled mass of faded blue and white plastic bags inside what was once its stomach.
Other highlights include a video demonstrating how to make plastic yarn, a rather frugal technique reminiscent of the Depression Era. Plus Victoria Beckham demonstrates just how glamorous being seen with eco-bags can look.
Chris Amos from eco-bags company, Reusabags.com said:
“Green Bags Forever Blog has been created to inform and entertain people who – like me – feel plastic bags should be a thing of the past. The shocking statistics alone about how many birds, animals and marine life are harmed or killed each year as result of this modern day menace should be reason enough to see plastic bags banned. In launching this Green Bags Forever Blog, I hope school children and green campaigners the world over discover information that will help them in their education and crusades.”
